I used ii and a half pounds of stew meat because honestly, I can't afford summit round. I also used sliced baby bella mushrooms instead of crimini. I did not accept time to make this in a dutch oven. I browned the meat in the oil, so added information technology to my crockpot with the celery and the carrots. I then sauteed the onions and garlic in the drippings with a piffling butter until the onions turned translucent, so I deglazed the pan with the wine. I poured all of it into the crockpot, and so added the tomatoes, potatoes, spices, beef stock and love apple sauce. I let this cook all day until my family got dwelling house. I made homemade yeast rolls to go with. This was one of the best stews I've always made. It's got a beefiness burgundy experience to it, it's rich and corrupt tasting. I had a big bowl when I got home from work and information technology was like eating a big hug. Splendid recipe.

Large and hearty, with a beefy love apple taste. Rich and robust, satisfying, stick to your ribs practiced. Other than coating the meat in flour first, I made no changes to the recipe. I had my doubts that 4-6 hours simmering was necessary and even thought it might work against this dish, merely I chose to follow the directions. Later on two hours I was set to call it quits just let it become some other hour – and shouldn't have. By this time, three hours, the meat had cleaved downward and started to fall apart into small pieces. I would accept much preferred a stew with expert-sized chunks of meat. Four stars rather than five for directions that essentially took this backward as information technology overcooked. Later two hours it seemed to accept reached a turning point and lost quality across that. An 60 minutes and a half to two hours would have resulted in tender meat that even so held its shape.

Delicious! I didn't have fresh tomatoes, so I used canned diced. Also, I didn't accept all the herbs recommended, so I used dried Rosemary, Thyme and Basil. Used Chiati for the ruddy wine and it went beautifully with the finished product. Best beef stew I have ever made! Such an easy recipe likewise! My married man loved it!

The sense of taste, which is what we're all afterwards in the kickoff place, conveys a rich delicious broth with tender sweetness vegetables and beef, making this stew a winner any day, although I reserve these meals preferably for Sunday tiffin or dinner ... and cooked in a deadening cooker (crock-pot) Being a retired butcher, catch chuck or shoulder roast on sale ... purchase a three or 4 pound roast ( boneless or bone in ) take information technology dwelling house and cut information technology up in i/2" pieces ( trimming the fat off at this time if your so inclined .... leaving some fat on improves the richness of the final product when cooked ) and saving at LEAST a dollar a pound over buying pre-packaged "stew meat", while decision-making the preferred seize with teeth size and fat content. /Use the amount of stew meat that you think information technology will have and freezing the rest in portion controlled freezer bags. (I dusted the meat with seasoned ( S&P ) flour before browning information technology in a skillet) During or after browning the meat, toss in and sauté the onion, celery, carrot, mushrooms and garlic (garlic last ... Do NOT Fire the garlic !) Next, deglaze skillet with some vino and add all to crock pot. I used a "Lambrusco" wine ... added 3 tbl. of "Kitchen Bouquet", and 1 tbl. of "Lee & Perrens Worchester Sauce". ( e'er! ) (optional ... toss in a hand total or two of frozen corn ( or a small can of "Niblets" white corn, drained ) .... aforementioned with peas (small preferred)... both, personal preference to add. This is a recipe not to be missed !

I really liked this!! I did equally Sarah suggested and used stew meat! Finished up in the crock! 4 .five hours on depression! Volition def make once again! But other change was in my spices..... Used an Italian alloy in lieu of the above and added 2 bay leaves while in the crock!

Made this up as posted - wonderful beef stew. Information technology's a bit of work to become the prep done but the results are well worth the effort. I may have cut the beef and potatoes a fleck smaller than 1 inch and with the 4 hour cooking fourth dimension they were more done, but nevertheless intact. I will keep closer to the ane inch recommendation next fourth dimension. One tip I saw somewhere that was helpful was to freeze the circular steak for xv-30 minutes (not frozen hard) to make cut it easier and it worked great.

I tried this recipe for the showtime time a few weeks ago. We were pleasantly surprised at how flavorful it was; we loved it so much that I am making it again today. This volition be our favorite get to throughout the wintertime season. We did add together a few other vegetables that we had effectually the house; this recipe easily lends itself to being tweaked to each persons liking. Having a recipe that uses such affordable cuts of meat brand it fifty-fifty more appealing to a single income family similar us; you could throw in some rice or a pasta and stretch it fifty-fifty that much further. Thanks so much chef Karen for this wonderful repast.

I used a picayune over two pounds of stew meat, and I cut back the mushrooms to one/2 pound. Other than these changes, I used the ingredients suggested by the recipe author. My stew meat was tender after three hours on the stove peak. I can't imagine that a meliorate cut of meat would concur together for 6 hours in the pot, and the vegetables would be nearly dissolved if cooked that long. This makes a generous amount of stew, and I had to apply a 6 quart dutch oven, since I exercise not take a skillet large enough to accommodate this. The stew as written nearly filled my pot. The stew liquid is well-flavored, though thin (I prefer a thicker, sauce consistency for stew), and not too strongly flavored with tomato. I just have ane other tiny criticism. Herb leaves plow nighttime and unattractive in love apple based sauces. I think information technology would exist more flavory to necktie them up in cheesecloth and remove before serving. I can well imagine this as a soup, if everything is cutting into bite-sized pieces. If y'all wish to make soup, I would recommend adding the carrots, mushrooms and potatoes later in the process, so the smaller pieces will not melt too long. Overall, I give the recipe four stars, both for the flavor and for the directions.
eleven/05/2014
To be fair, as written, information technology is a four star recipe due to a chip of blandness to the flavor. But the second time I fabricated it, I added merely basil and oregano as my spices, just upped the garlic to four cloves and added a quarter cup of Worcestershire sauce. Now it is five stars! Yum!!!
02/28/2013
Excellent combination/ratio of beef/red wine/lycopersicon esculentum. The rich goop and mushrooms made this really special. We loved it. I've been using this recipe now for several years...so good. (03.27.13; 03.eleven.17.)
xi/03/2012
I followed the recipe equally is. I too used the stew meat every bit Sarah. My family & I very muched enjoyed this yummy stew. This recipe does make alot of stew. However, I'm okay with that. The only change was after cooking the vegetables, I put the cooked beef in the crockpot & added the vegetables in the crockpot. I cooked it in the crockpot for iv hours. Nosotros similar to season our soups/stews once information technology'southward in our bowls. My son used Tony's (cajun seasoning) in his bowl. I used a small amount of sea salt & Chalulah (almost similar Tobasco, but much better taste).
01/12/2013
I don't call up I would make this again, serves at to the lowest degree 12 and on the expensive side to make. It really needs table salt and pepper. Filled my crockpot to the height. Took at least 6 hours to cook. Add table salt an pepper to gustation and a little Worcestershire to taste also
10/20/2014
First-class base recipe. It is fabulous as-is, but it became a weekly request from the family in one case I added about viii ounces of tikka masala sauce to the pot. I have made this with Calabaza (pumpkin) and sugariness potatoes. You can put whatever veggies you lot have on hand and information technology volition come out smashing. One time I had to utilize "Holland Firm" cooking sherry because nosotros are not vino drinkers and I don't accept wine on hand. It didn't seem to change the gustatory modality. I also have only fabricated it with stew meat because to utilize a more than expensive cut given the long melt time, in my opinion, is a waste product. The meat breaks down beautifully.
04/13/2014
I fabricated this dish dozen times for dissimilar family and each i of them love information technology!!! Made it in a conventional oven, Aga stove, electric stove, they all turn out GREAT!!! either I used cheap beefiness ribs, top circular beef, stewing beef chunks (as long as you trimmed the fatty or boil it for a few mins to lessen the fatty. thank y'all for sharing!
ten/25/2016
This was fabulous!! I used an 8QT Dutch oven over gas flame the unabridged time, and needed every bit of that space. I followed recipe except for adding a bit of Worscheshire Sauce (1 T approx) later on 2 hours to cut the acidity of the tomatos. Didn't add much, but information technology helped balance flavors. I also added 2 cups frozen peas nearly fifteen min before serving. I was worried about all the liquid, peculiarly after it had cooked 1 1/2 hrs, and liquid was still watery. I was simmering with chapeau on, and then decided to remove chapeau to cook downwards liquid and concentrate flavour for the adjacent two ane/two hours That was the magic of this dish! All-time stew I've ever made! Side by side fourth dimension I'll cook unabridged time w/o lid, and cut meat into smaller pcs, as well as celery. On the other hand, Family unit told me not to alter a thing!!!
02/01/2014
I enjoyed merely I recall traditional beefiness stew is the way to go for family. Used parsnips instead of carrot & turnip which is so good in a stew. Looking for winter veggies that my family does non quite grasp the "seasonal" thing only I'll keep trying! Great starting point!
05/03/2014
Northern Italian Beefiness Stew Haiku: "Won't make this once again. Also much attempt, costs likewise much. And tasted manner 'meh.'" I was surprised that this could smell so outrageously good, and yet the gustation was then banal. I followed the recipe exactly westward/ the exception of using stew meat (that I'd rolled in s&p & flour b4 searing) and simply couldn't get over that the richness (smell, and $$$-wise) of all of those ingredients coming together could result in such a yawn-worthy gustation.
10/26/2016
I really liked this recipe, bold and bawdy in flavor. We inverse the meat to top sirloin, and then the meat was not tough and wouldn't have to cook for 4+ hours. Boiled the tomatoes to skin them, and only cooked for an hr once everything was added in. The vino and broth reduced into a wonderfully thick sauce. Don't use stew meat, and don't flour the meat before frying. Stew meat is the tips off of what the butcher cuts ... not the best meat! Flour changes the consistence and will make information technology tougher and bland ... flour absorbs liquid!!! This too does not serve 12 as I've seen from someone else ... it will serve 6 adults at the most.
02/03/2018
This was a tasty beef stew, one of the best I've every made. I used a bandage iron Dutch oven and cooked it on the stove top for about three and a one-half hours. Changes: I had some pearl onions on hand so I used them forth with one regular onion. I also added a footling soy sauce and 2 bay leaves to requite information technology more savory season. And I find if the potatoes are added besides soon they tend to disintegrate into the liquid, so I added them for the last hour of the boil. Finally, I didn't accept fresh tomatoes, then I used a can (actually box) of chopped Italian tomatoes. UPDATE: I made it again but closer to the original recipe, although I did add together soy sauce and a bay leaf as before. I didn't mensurate amounts, but rather went by feel. Virtually importantly, I allow it simmer for the full six hours this time, and that made a big difference. The beef was tender, the soup was thickened, and the tastes were all melded together. Information technology was even better this time.
01/09/2013
Really splendid. I used simply two tomatoes and one can of tomato sauce, considering I didn't want information technology to be too tomato-y. I added a fleck of chopped green pepper, considering I live in New Orleans where onion, celery and green pepper are the "holy trinity." And I didn't accept the sage and marjoram handy, just it was cracking. I trust this recipe would survive a fair corporeality of experimentation. I only cooked information technology about two one/2 hours. I wait that cooking information technology four-vi hours would produce mush.
04/23/2015
Loved, loved, loved this stew recipe….. made information technology too with lean stew beefiness and followed every other direction. Very yummy and without the use of flour. This is going into my permanent recipe file. Try it. Yous won't be disappointed.
11/01/2012
This is a great recipe! I finished cooking it in the ho-hum cooker. My family loved!
11/08/2017
Excellent! Made as recipe stated, added a splash or ii of worcestershire sauce. Definitely will add to the rotation.
09/09/2018
What a cracking soup! I really enjoyed the combination of flavors. Instead of cooking this on the stove, I just threw everything in the tiresome cooker for half dozen - 8 hours on depression.
10/25/2016
This dish was amazing. I fabricated it very close to original recipe because everyone was raving near it. Positively no disappointments. I cut my top circular in smaller cubes and used canned diced tomatoes. This is a large dish. I feed 9 adults with a footling leftover. PS. I besides fabricated buttermilk cornbread and skillet apple pie.
01/08/2013
Delicious. Great recipe. Everyone loved it!
01/31/2018
Wonderful stew! Added 1 tablespoon each of soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce and a ane/iv tsp of hot pepper flakes. Used canned, diced tomatoes. Cutting up a bract roast for the beef. Everything else as per the recipe. The all-time beef stew I've ever made. Thanks for the recipe.
x/26/2016
This is a hearty, flavorful stew. I like the spices and would also add Worchestershire. Just because I like it in stew. I always make a recipe the first time according to the cooks specs to run into what they were going for and what information technology tastes like for me. Beingness a retired classically trained Chef, I thought this was very proficient. I used top sirloin because I like it better than top circular but that's the only thing I did different. Exercise not roll the meat in flour and look the recipe to plow out the same or just equally skillful. Y'all show your apprentice side when you practice things similar this to a recipe. I did peel the tomatoes because I don't like tomato pare in stews. Very easy to practise. Just cut a shallow x in the elevation of information technology and drop in humid h2o for about iii minutes . And so speedily into an ice bath and the pare should slide right off. Then cut as normal. Love the herbs called for. And btw, veal is beef. Just so everyone knows. And since I but came back from a month in Europe 9 days beingness in Italian republic, I know starting time mitt that they practice use beef in soups and stews likewise as veal. Information technology'south simply upward to the Chef'southward discretion.
03/31/2014
This was a groovy recipe, flavorful and rich. Yeah, it takes a fleck of time, but well worth it. I cut the recipe in half, and there's enough for 6. Didn't take fresh mushrooms, but a 4 oz. tin can of mushroom pieces substituted well. Likewise added 1 i/2 cups fresh greenish beans, which went well with it. Served with the remaining vino from cooking (a Petite Sirah)...volition definitely serve this again
01/12/2019
Succulent combination of ingredients as written. I agree with other reviewers that 4 to v hour simmer (stove-top in a cast dutch oven) is much too long. Mine was ready at ii hours. Thanks for posting!
11/27/2017
Did not add together 2 cups of tomato sauce nor 2 cups of celery. At best, add a stalk or two. Instead of the tomato sauce, I added a few tablespoons of love apple paste which is sufficient and much closer to a true Italian Beef Stew.
04/22/2017
I reduced the servings to one half. Other than that I followed the recipe and information technology was keen.
03/16/2018
I think this is the best stew I have ever fabricated. I will definitely make over again. I followed the recipe exactly and it was a piddling soupy. So next time I volition try and thicken it up by adding a little flour or cornstarch. Or I could cut back on the liquid. I did make it in my crock pot. Excellent recipe.
11/28/2017
PERFEC+ION!
10/09/2016
I left out the mushrooms and substituted peas. I made in on the stove top but let it cook overnight in a crockpot. I dreamed of eating it all night. I refrigerated it in the morning and heated it upwards for dinner. Not one drop was left! I even cleaned my bowl with some fresh Italian staff of life. I will make it again.
01/thirteen/2014
Made this recipe with just a few subs. Did not use mushrooms as I was out! Subbed i tin can of diced tomatoes and it worked great! Loved the stew and would definitely brand it again. Wife said to increase the amounts of seasoning and I would agree.
10/03/2017
The flavor is wonderful. I simmered nearly iii hours and my veggies were well done. The beef nevertheless not and so much. Adjacent time I will apply boneless chuck, this is what is usually use for stews. I volition make over again with this modify. Cheers for a not bad flavorful dinner.
01/19/2019
Love it! Gustatory modality only like idea it would! It's going to be one of my go to meals!
02/19/2019
YUM! The wine and Italian seasoning in this stew combine very nicely. As other reviewers have done, I did use a can of diced tomatoes (forgot to get fresh) just otherwise I followed the ingredients here. Off-white notice, I don't tend to measure on recipes like this, then I can't say I used *exact* amounts, but I didn't change whatsoever of the seasonings, just went by taste. And at the end I added a picayune flour slurry - I like my stew to have gravy, not simply liquid. But I'll make this over again, and perchance try information technology every bit a soup - bet some cannelleni beans would be a skilful improver...
10/24/2016
Fantastic! Eating it at present, incredibly rich and circuitous ! A winner!
12/12/2017
This recipe came together nicely. However, the instructions direct you lot to put all the ingredients into a skillet. I used a 12" cast iron skillet (near 2" deep) and institute this incommunicable. I cooked each stage of the ingredients, and so combined them in the dull cooker. Cooked on "High" for almost half dozen hours, then switched to "Low" until prepare to serve. It turned out great! (Leftovers were reheated the side by side day and were withal excellent.)
10/24/2016
Awesome ..
12/01/2019
I volition never brand beef stew whatsoever other manner! Loved information technology...I did add a sprig of fresh oregano and a bay leaf.....
10/23/2016
just another beef stew with similar gustation. Beef likewise expensive and this better quality meat tends to be a drier taste than a cheaper fat cut which I utilize for these type of recipes.
01/04/2016
This was but OK. I made it in a slow cooker, dumped all the ingredients in together, perchance that's why it turned out and so bland. Also although I have a decent-sized tedious cooker, it wouldn't fit - had to cutting the quantities in half. Lastly, it turned out really runny so had to thicken information technology up using flour. Would definitely not get in once more, which is unfortunate because the giant amount of leftovers we have.
10/24/2016
Fabricated five minor changes: Equally recommended, I chop beef into much smaller pieces. I chopped the mushrooms, rather than sliced them. I used Herb Ox no sodium powder & water, rather than prepared goop to cut the sodium intake (heart issues). I doubled the dried basil. I started (browned the meat, etc) in a dutch oven on the stove height and (once everything was added & was just boiling) moved it to a preheated oven (200*) for 5 hours. Yes, I will brand it again. Note: in that location are only two of us, simply batches of it freezes and reheats in the microwave quite well.
01/28/2019
Is there less than one? This was truly a disappointment. Both my husband and I were really looking forwards to this recipe. And later on the initial five hours of cooking we tasted it and were amazed how banal it was considering all the great fresh ingredients you have in it. So past adding in Worcester shire sauce by adding Gravy Primary, additional bullion cubes, It simply started to take flavor. Not something that I was anticipating but certainly feel that this recipe was a total fail. We will non be serving this again.
10/25/2016
I used venison stew meat and added fresh basil aso a garnish on each bowl. It turned out wonderfully full of flavor. I as well added anew additional cup of the red wine just seemed like it needed it to add together that piffling actress taste. This i will definitely get in the recipe rotation.
02/08/2019
I cut this recipe in half and used stew beef. I prepped everything the night before then put information technology all in the crockpot and put in fridge. The side by side twenty-four hour period I cooked in the crockpot on low for 5 hours. It was very good merely it did brand way more than merely four servings (which should have been 1/2 recipe).
11/16/2018
My husband and I made it . Followed the recipe merely added Worcestershire sauce and lots more garlic and seasoning than it asks for. We as well black peppered the beefiness before searing it. I don't eat meat but my husband loved it and ate it all through the week. Now going to make another batch to take to my son at the university ??.
xi/xxx/2017
The stew definitely needed some stronger seasoning to avoid a blandness. With all the meat, vegetables, and potatoes; salt and pepper should have been essential. We as well added hot smoked paprika. The basic recipe is a three-Star and information technology needs some work.
ten/24/2016
Quite the splendid recipe. I normally adjust most recipes to adjust my taste, simply not this i. My maternal grandparents emigrated from northern Italy and when I saw the ingredient list knew this was the real deal. GREAT flavor!
01/23/2016
Entire family loved it! Dandy flavors. I cooked it in a crock pot for about 7 hours. Lots of broth and it didn't really thicken - but tasted great! And yeah, I added salt.
01/18/2018
Love this recipe! And then succulent. I made it on the stove height, just I think information technology would be possible to get in in the crock pot after calculation and burning off the wine. Yous'll definitely want to pick up some staff of life too considering the sauce is astonishing.
x/27/2016
After it was done information technology was a bit to winey for our taste. It overpowered the herbs. This fourth dimension I cut the wine to 1 loving cup and added two cap fulls of Kitchen Bouquet. I also added 1 can of cut Italian green beans. Delicious
01/08/2018
I rarely rate a recipe, but this is absolutely the all-time beef stew recipe I have ever fabricated. My whole family decided to ditch whatsoever others and stick with this ane from now on! The just caveats I would mention are to spotter your time - mine was done in most 2 ours on low on my stove top. Perhaps add together the potatoes about 1 hour into the cooking - I nigh did, merely decided to stick to the recipe, and they were just a bit overdone. I besides coated the beef cubes in seasoned flour before browning, as that is how I have e'er fabricated beefiness stew - information technology helps to thicken the stew up during cooking. I too added chopped fresh green beans the concluding xx minutes of cooking because I have always put light-green beans in beef stew. The flavor of the broth was perfect!!
08/12/2020
It was really good! I made changes since I didn't have everything and then it was kind of like a beefiness veggie soup. Meat was frozen so no browning or red wine. Also no marjoram or sage so I added some oregano. No fresh tomatoes so I used 2 cans of diced with fire roasted garlic. Definitely gonna make again.
08/04/2016
Very skilful! Used wild mushrooms and cabernet. Omitted the tomato sauce and added more goop to brand soup.
10/30/2019
definintely needs salt and oregano, and I would only use the very best canned tomatoes i..e San Marzano, unless your garden tomatoes are very flavorful. I used hot business firm and they were not smashing. Also, considering the receipe called or huge amounts, i used to InstantPot on pressure cook for xxx minutes for the meat and potatoes and then put it all together. if you simmer all the ingredients for one hour, the meat volition be very tender . Remember merely use very fresh garlic.
03/09/2020
outstanding beefiness stew. Changes not needed. It does make a lot so halve the recipe unless you lot have a big grouping to feed or like lots of leftovers.
ten/25/2016
This stew was amazing. No changes other than to cutting the recipe in one-half. I volition definitely make again!
xi/08/2019
I honey this recipe! Dark, bold, rich flavor....I changed very little. I coated the meat in flour before browning, doubled the tomato sauce and added an extra loving cup of broth because the BF likes juicier foods to dip breadstuff in. I used fresh sage and thyme considering I had them. I lightly simmered for four hours, and covered the terminal two hours to retain more than liquid. Volition do once more!
01/30/2019
I used all ingredients listed except I only used two tomatoes because that is all that I had on manus. In addition, I added 2 bay leaves and actress spices which included an extra tablespoon of minced garlic and a mix of seasonings that I use on most everything savory which contains blackness pepper, salt, garlic, mustard seed, coriander seeds. I sprinkled this spice mix on the meat along with a niggling garlic pulverisation and onion pulverisation. I also fabricated a lycopersicon esculentum paste mixture that I used in identify of love apple sauce which I did not accept on hand and added frozen dark-green peas. I used a small mesh sifter to lightly dust meat with flour. I browned the meat, removed from pan, added onion and celery, then added garlic. Next I added the wine and let cook down. I adjacent added the tomato and beef along with beef broth. I made a mixture of 2 Tablespoons love apple paste (Cento in a tube), 1 Tablespoon Heinz 57 sauce, one Tablespoon Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce and i teaspoon improve than burgoo chicken in near 1 cup of h2o. Added that to pot along with the listed spices. Then cooked for nigh 1 i/two hours. Then added mushrooms. After near 45 mins added carrots. Let cook another 30 minutes and added potatoes. Everything simmered for some other 30 minutes. I added a 12 oz purse of frozen peas and let that melt for 15 - xx minutes. The goop was a little thin and so I mixed a 1 Tablespoon flour with 1 Tablespoon corn starch mixed into 1/2 c water. Stirred into stew and let simmer a few more minutes before
11/xvi/2019
I've fabricated this recipe several times and it is a winner. There'due south a few things that I like to practice differently. First in the prep I purée one of the onions and half of the celery in my food processor. I notice information technology seems to help thicken the goop. I like garlic and add together three or four cloves more to the sauté stride. I also use a large can 28oz of chopped tomatoes and omit the love apple sauce. I've made it this way the terminal few times. I've made it exactly equally the recipe states and it's equally skilful.
12/09/2017
Made as directed & will probably make again but will brand some changes. At that place was something we didn't treat. Call back it might have been the thyme. Nosotros volition try information technology over again but volition endeavor information technology using bottled Italian seasoning & regular mushrooms. AND cutting information technology in half. Makes WAY too much!
11/27/2017
Why waste a more expensive cut similar top of the round for something you're going to simmer for hours? Go with a cheaper cut that is perfect in a slow cooker.
01/23/2016
Added salt and pepper.
03/13/2020
Delicious! Just like my Italian mama used to make. Fifty-fifty better the next day.
10/27/2015
I did everything the aforementioned except used pearl onions instead and made basic dumpling recipe from AR. Information technology'southward awesome. Will definitely practise again! !
11/24/2019
This stew reminded me of my grandmother's. Then incredibly good! Makes a lot!
09/11/2014
I really enjoyed this recipe,I added salt and 1 head of cabbage.
12/04/2017
Probably won't make this again. It needs salt and Worchestershire. Plus my 6 qt Dutch oven barely held all the ingredients.
04/06/2018
My family unit said this was the best stew they ever had! I didn't put mushrooms in because nosotros didn't have whatever but otherwise I followed the recipe. I loved that it got really thick without any flour or other thickeners. The vino really adds a lot of richness. I use my crockpot a lot merely it was Sunday so I cooked it on the stove and I think that fabricated it amend.
11/10/2018
This was a fantastic stew recipe. I used cubed brusk ribs for the meat. I did flour the meat earlier browning. Other substitutions I made were 1tsp of oregano vs 1/2tsp of sage(I was out of sage). four garlic cloves vs 2. The flavor was missing something still. And so I added 1tb of soy sauce, 1tb of Worcestershire sauce, and 1tsp of Dijon mustard. It gave the stew a deeper more than umami flavor, and merely a tiny zing to bring these flavors together. I call up without the changes, this would only be 4stars. Also, I needed at to the lowest degree the 4hrs for the flavor to exist absorbed into the meat, as is such with braised short ribs. Served with a crusty loaf bread. Used a Dutch oven vs a Crock-Pot.
02/24/2020
First-class recipe. The only change I made was to use ii cups chicken goop and two cups beef broth instead of all beef goop. The stew was done in four hours, and I removed the hat and simmered for another half hour to thicken the sauce. This is now my beef stew recipe.
04/12/2017
Excellent stew. I made it simply as the recipe said except mushrooms because I forgot to become them. Very simple but the slow simmer bring and then much season.
10/26/2016
Bully recipe! Piece of cake to ready. Very few items to clean after cooking. Super delicious!
11/10/2019
Instead of adding tomato sauce I used 2 cans of Stewed Tomatoes. I also added the potatoes the last xxx mins instead of when the beef was added. We also added frozen peas (10oz) in the last few minutes. My family unit loved it. It was a big hit.
ten/26/2017
Tasted GR8 with dumplings too.

This is getting iv stars because as is it is kind of bland. I doubled the herbs and spices added; and I felt information technology needed a piddling table salt and pepper. We did bask it, though, and I'll probably make again. I made in the slow cooker and it was heaven to walk in the door later a long twenty-four hours'southward work and smell this cooking!

I fabricated a couple of small changes based on what was in my cupboards, just it was groovy!

very good added some tomato paste and a petty spicy V8 and cooked in slow cooker. Even better 2 days later

I made no changes to this at all and my family absolutely loved it. It is a picayune more than complex and then most beef stews then be prepared to take some fourth dimension with it but SOO worth information technology. I also did use a actually high quality steak (tenderloin) which made the meat so delicious.

I drained a can of diced tomatoes instead of using raw. Too..regular mushrooms. Swell recipe. I halved it. Still too much for two of us.

I had high hopes for this, only in the terminate I was disappointed. I made half of the recipe and I followed it pretty closely. I did sub a tin of diced tomatoes for the fresh tomatoes, but that was the only change I made. I was skeptical of the lengthy cooking time, so I checked information technology frequently. I started at a depression simmer, uncovered, just after two hours a lot of the sauce had evaporated away, and so I covered it for another one-half hour. At that indicate the meat was tender, but everything else was over cooked and practically falling autonomously. It had good flavor, but it needed more than sauce. I should have covered information technology sooner. If I were to make this again, I would alter the process by starting to cook the meat kickoff and adding the vegetables later. I would as well start cooking it covered and uncover it after to thicken the sauce.

The leftovers were but as adept

Did not turn out well. Flavorless!

Was a good recipe. Information technology was a flake bland for my tastes simply would go far over again and pace up the spices a bit. I didn't use the vino though and didn't miss it. Biggest upside....My in-laws both thought it was a keeper. :)

The only thing I would like more, is more beef in this stew.

This is my new Go TO beef stew recipe. Not too thick, non too sparse... and oh so easy. I only tossed in some frozen butternut squash cubes & extra onions. Yum!

This is a good stew - albeit, if made in a Dutch oven on the stove. I followed the recipe and agree with other reviewers, that the meat is bland. I could not get all the liquid into the crockpot, along with everything else. My crock (which is normal size) was filled to the brim. If I were to make this once more, I would make it on the stove and utilise stew meat (fatty and more flavor); table salt, pepper and flour beef; and perchance cut wine to 1 cup and employ that to deglaze the pan; add salt and pepper to gustation; and perhaps a bay leaf. It'south a good "base" recipe in which you can make many changes - beer instead of wine; turnips instead of potatoes, add peas, green beans, change seasoning, etc.

lots of work but well worth it! followed the recipe my only correction would be not to do a skillet. I used a big frying pan but I think a Dutch would be better. salt and pepper if desired.

Yummy! I did add more garlic but other than that, followed the recipe the first time.

Comfort food at it's best! Substituted 2-28oz. cans San Marzano tomatoes for fresh. Adapted for common salt and fresh footing pepper subsequently simmering. Pair with rustic breadstuff and zinfandel vino.

First of all if yous are going to make this y'all need a really big frying pan and/or high chapters slow cooker. If I ever make this again I will dust the beef with flour before browning and cutting the recipe in half. I followed the recipe exactly and wasn't actually impressed with the result, although my husband liked it. I just don't think it was worth all the trouble. There are "easier" stew recipes that are just as good.

My husband and I loved this stew! I used stew meat for convenience, and I used a whole canteen of crimson vino (iii cups) Everything else was the aforementioned. The stew had no added table salt and pepper, which is the only matter I would alter next fourth dimension. Information technology made a ton of stew -- it barely fit in my biggest soup kettle -- so I don't know how they cooked it in a skillet. I froze a lot too!

My family unit really didn't similar this. My husband ended up calculation tons of salt to his and grated cheese just to add season. :(
12/04/2018
Substituted tomato paste instead of sauce, but yet had a "thin" flavor to it. Non equally hearty as I hoped; perhaps a diff cut of meat would assistance.
03/12/2017
I didn't have mushrooms, vino or marjoram. Information technology turned great anyway.
